MEDICAL EYE SURGERY
LASIK
Abrams Eye Institute now performs LASIK procedures at our office in Las Vegas.
What is LASIK?
LASIK (or Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a type of surgery that uses a computer-controlled ultraviolet laser to reshape the cornea, improving the way light is bent or focused within your eye. In a way, the laser actually recreates the curvature of the glasses or contacts you are wearing now to become a permanent part of your eye.
How does LASIK Surgery Work?
In the LASIK procedure, a thin flap of cornea is created using a special instrument called a microkeratome. With the flap of cornea lifted, a computer-controlled laser reshapes the interior of the cornea using high-energy pulses of light. Each pulse of the laser removes only a fraction of a micron (1/1000 of a millimeter) of the cornea, distributed in a pattern that creates a precise lens in the cornea itself, correcting the patient's vision problem which is then covered and protected by replacing the thin flap of corneal tissue. The laser portion of the operation usually occurs in less than 60 seconds.
The flap of corneal tissue is then allowed to dry and adhere for several minutes, using a natural body glue (called fibronectin) and held firmly in place by the pumping action of the endothelial cells on the back of the cornea. The extraordinary healing properties of the cornea allow the flap to adhere without stitches and since the area of surgery is covered by the corneal flap, little pain is experienced with LASIK surgery.
What is the recovery time for LASIK?
Because of the superficial nature of the surgery, the strength of the eye is not compromised. Unlike other eye surgeries, you can return to normal bending and lifting immediately after the surgery.
Unlike LASIK's predecessor, PRK surgery, vision returns rapidly. By the day after the LASIK surgery, there is little visible evidence of the surgery.
