Balanced Diets Rich In Nutrients Keep Eyes Healthy

The benefits of eating good food, and enjoying that food in smart portions, is something most people only think about when considering getting to a healthy body weight. This is one of the reasons why there are more than 60,000 results returned when searching for ‘diet book’ on Amazon, and that so many resolutions are focused on changing eating habits.

Certain foods have shown promise results in helping people keep their eyes healthy, reducing eye health risks, and those foods extend beyond the widely know, but still helpful, carrot.

“The reason why the term ‘sensible diet’ came about is because it makes sense from multiple perspectives, including the health of the eyes, to eat good food,” said Dr. Jack Abrams, from the Abrams Eye Institute. “Studies have found that certain foods contain vital vitamins and minerals that can keep the eyes healthy, while also potentially lower risks for eye conditions, such as cataracts.”

Eating food that’s good for your eyes doesn’t need to be difficult, as it’s just a matter of adding in, or adding more, of a few healthy items into the daily diet. Good foods include readily available items such as sweet potatoes, raw red peppers, salmon, sunflower seeds and eggs.

A simple food like eggs contain many beneficial ingredients that also happen to work together in ways that the body can’t get through taking processed vitamins and minerals. This includes the zinc in the egg working with minerals in the yolk that help collaborate to block harmful blue light from damaging the retina.

“The data behind the benefits of good eating for the eyes is fascinating for scientists like myself,” said Dr. Abrams. “But you don’t have to be a scientist to understand or enjoy the benefits of smart eating, it’s just a matter of adding a few more of these items to your daily diet, while maybe dropping a few that are not healthy to improve balance.”

Dr. Abrams also advised patients to integrate more leafy greens to their diets, such as kale and spinach, as well as food rich in natural vitamin C and E. Also, as noted, it’s important to eat all foods in proper portion, as maintaining a healthy weight is important to avoiding diabetes and other health issues that can adversely affect the eyes and vision.
