Overview
A chalazion, commonly referred to as a stye, is a prevalent eye condition that can be effectively treated at our Las Vegas offices. This condition manifests as a cyst on the eyelid, resulting from a blockage in a meibomian gland located in the upper eyelid.
Typically, a chalazion resembles a pimple but with a noticeably larger head. While it is usually painless, there are instances where it can become infected and inflamed, causing discomfort.
Treatment Options
Our board-certified ophthalmologists provide a range of treatment options to address chalazions. For smaller chalazions, the initial approach often involves the prescription of topical antibiotic eye drops. These drops are designed to reduce the appearance of the chalazion, although they do not completely remove it.
Surgical Removal Process
For more persistent or larger chalazions, surgical intervention may be necessary to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence. During this procedure, a local anesthetic is applied to the patient’s eyelid to ensure comfort and prevent pain.
The ophthalmologist then makes a small incision to remove the chalazion. Pressure is applied to the wound to minimize bleeding, and in most cases, stitches are not required due to the small size of the incision. However, if the chalazion is particularly large, stitches may be necessary, although they remain minimally visible. After removal, the cyst is sent to a laboratory to check for any cancerous cells, a rare occurrence in such cases.
