By September 5, 2014March 8th, 2016No Comments

Wearing glasses or contact lenses can be a hassle when you consider all of the time you dedicate to them every day. Cleaning your glasses or contact lenses and making sure everything is stored correctly adds up quickly. If you are tired from all the time you invest in caring for your lenses, LASIK may be the right decision for you.

What is LASIK?

LASIK or laser eye surgery is a type of surgery to correct myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism. During LASIK an ophthalmologist uses a laser to reshape the cornea of the eye(s) in order to improve vision. Since the first LASIK surgery was performed in the United States in 1991, more than 19 million LASIK procedures have been performed.

Am I a candidate for LASIK?

If your vision has been stable for at least two years and you are over 18 years of age, you may be a candidate for LASIK eye surgery. You and your ophthalmologist can discuss the specific qualifications which include eye health, realistic expectations for surgical outcome and if you have any other medical conditions.

What can I expect if I have LASIK?

The actual procedure takes less than 1/2 hour, but you will need someone to drive you home. Healing after LASIK eye surgery is quick. Your vision may be blurry for the first day, but results are evident within a few days post-surgery. Your ophthalmologist will prescribe eye drops to keep your eye hydrated and healthy.

What is the cost of LASIK?

The cost of LASIK varies depending on your specific needs. However when you factor in the cost of contact lenses or glasses, LASIK can actually save you money in the long term.
