Corneal Transplant Performed in our Las Vegas Offices

Corneal transplants are used when a patient’s cornea has become damaged or unhealthy. Also known as cornea grafting, it is the surgical replacement of the transparent front of the eye that covers the iris, pupil, and anterior chambers. Transplants are most common amongst middle-aged and elderly adults who have experienced a significant decrease, or damage to their vision. People who have had recent damage to their cornea or have been diagnosed with ocular disease such as keratoconus will likely need a corneal transplant if their conditions do not improve with preliminary medication.

We perform corneal transplants at our Las Vegas clinic, under the expertise of board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Jack Abrams.

Eye Conditions Treated Through Corneal Transplants

Vision can be damaged by a variety of ailments, including keratoconus, corneal degeneration, ketatoglobus, and dystrophy. Cornea transplants are an excellent way to counteract any of these ailments. The patient can also choose to have the ophthalmologist reconstruct the anatomy of the eye, or preserve the corneal anatomy of a person who has stromal thinning. Cornea grafting is also used to remove inflamed corneal tissue that is unresponsive to antibiotics or other such treatments. It may also be used cosmetically to improve the appearance of patients who have unsightly or undesirable cornea scars from a previous ailment.

Expected Recovery

The recovery process varies between patients. Our ophthalmologists prescribe several medications to prevent infection and to control both pain and swelling. Patients will also need to wear a protective metal eye shield with a gauze patch to minimize swelling during the immediate days after the surgery and return for frequent follow-up exams. It’s also important to be aware that the eye will be more susceptible to injury in the future, so it’s important to be more cautious when playing sports, or doing any other physical activity.

If you feel you are a candidate for a corneal transplant or would like to discuss the possibility of having one, don’t hesitate to contact us. You’ll feel better once you meet with our ophthalmologists and learn about the benefits you personally can expect from the procedure.

We are offering comprehensive eye exams in our Las Vegas office to diagnose and treat glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and other typical eye conditions.
